Community Scientists will be surveying for endangered species at Wilcox Ranch.

Meet at Jepson Prairie Preserve at 9:30, and we will caravan to Wilcox Ranch.

A short walk over moderate terrain will take us to a vernal pool were two species of special concern have been observed. Downingia pusilla and Legenere limosa are endangered wildflowers endemic to vernal pools. Over the past few years, snow geese have increasingly utilized an area that was mapped to support Downingia pusilla and Legenere limosa. Snow geese are grubbers – their favorite foods are roots, new shoots, and the crowns of tender young plants. They are not species specific; they care more about the age of the plant than the species. It is possible that the geese may consume the Legenere limosa and Downingial pusilla. Staff and volunteers will survey and map the Legenere limosa and Downingial pusilla.

No experience identifying these plants is necessary – training will be provided. This property is closed to the public, so opportunities like this are the only way to visit. **may be postponed if season does not progress as anticipated**
