On Saturday, January 17, a dedicated group of volunteers got an early start on the MLK holiday weekend by improving a section of the Bay Area Ridge Trail on land owned by the Solano Land Trust (SLT) adjacent to Blue Rock Springs Park in Vallejo. With advance coordination by SLT engagement specialist Di Holokahi and organized by SLT 2025 Volunteer of the Year Stephen “Mos” Johnson, the volunteers placed and secured log barriers to deter e-bike use on unauthorized shortcut trails. These shortcut trails are unsafe for visitors and cause erosion and damage to the trail and adjacent vegetation.
The crew included both long-time SLT docents that lead nature hikes on SLT properties as well as first-time volunteers, joined by Ridge Trail and SLT staff. The City of Vallejo loaned tools from their Public Works tool trailer. Access was facilitated by the Great Vallejo Recreation District, which owns and operates Blue Rock Springs Park.
The Blue Rock Springs Trail is a part of the Bay Area Ridge Trail, which will eventually encircle the Bay Area with a multi-use loop trail extending from southern Santa Clara County to northern Napa County. SLT is currently working with partners in hopes of opening a new section of the Ridge Trail across the Vallejo Swett Ranch to connect with the Hiddenbrooke section of the Ridge Trail. With the completion of the Vallejo Swett trail section, the Ridge Trail in Solano County will extend from the Benicia Bridge to the Napa County line adjacent to Lynch Canyon Open Space Park and will provide new opportunities for outdoor recreation for residents of western Solano County.
The next volunteer work day on the Blue Rock Springs Trail will be May 23, starting at 9:30 AM. To volunteer, contact Di Holokahi (di@solanolandtrust.org) or look for the announcement on our web site: Event Calendar : Events & News : Solano Land Trust.
